Bellybutton

Jellyfish formed out of the ashes of a yucky band called Beatnik Beatch. They blended right in with all those 80's bands who were kinda new-wave influenced but not really. Sorry if that was confusing, but if you hear them you'll know what i mean. For a better history of Beatnik Beatch and what happened, see Adam Gimbel's Jellyfish history.
For now I'll just tell you that Andy Sturmer and Roger Manning were in that band and they weren't happy, though they were signed to a major record label, Atlantic. The problem was over the... general BLANDness of the music. Roger and Andy were already recording demos of songs they were writing when Beatnik finally kicked the bucket.

Somewhere along the line, Andy and Roger amassed several songs and a "bidding war" ensued to see what label would get this young new band. BAND?! The boys grabbed guitarist Jason Falkner (now a solo artist with a rabid following) and Roger's brother Chris who quickly learned bass. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, but the story kept unfolding...
Producers Albhy Galuten and Jack Joseph Puig were hired by Charisma to come in and produce this "band" that had never played a gig. It turned out quite well, thanks to a beautiful performance by the boys and great production. Session bassists were brought in. Bellybutton was released in 1991. Soon, the newly named Jellyfish were on MTV.

Song List:
The Man I Used To Be
That Is Why
The King Is Half Undressed
I Wanna Stay Home
She Still Loves Him
All I Want Is Everything
Now She Knows She's Wrong
Bedspring Kiss
Baby's Coming Back
Calling Sarah

after this album, Jellyfish toured with the Black Crowes, they got to open for INXS at Wembley Stadium (!!!) in front of the largest crowd they ever played to, they released an EP, "Scary Go Round" and recorded a few miscellaneous songs with other people, notably Ringo Starr.
Jason Falkner left to pursue a solo career, first with The Grays (The Grays included Jon Brion, who later played on Spilt Milk) and then on his own. Chris Manning left because he didn't really like life on the road. He was a pretty darn good bassist for somebody who had just picked the instrument up! He has since been a cook and a sound engineer.
